How Does Unwanted Pigmentation Develop?

Pigmentation occurs when your skin produces excess melanin, the natural pigment responsible for your skin color. This overproduction causes concentrated areas of darkness to surface in the form of spots, patches or more diffuse changes in skin tone. While melanin is crucial for protecting your skin from UV damage, various triggers can encourage the overproduction and concentration of melanin.

Sun exposure is one of the main culprits behind pigmentation issues. Years of UV radiation stimulate the cells that make melanin (melanocytes) to work overtime, resulting in sun spots and age spots that become more prominent as time passes.

Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy, menopause, or while taking birth control can also trigger melanin production, leading to a condition called melasma that typically appears as brownish patches on the cheeks, forehead and upper lip.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is an issue that develops after your skin experiences trauma from acne, cuts, burns or aggressive treatments. As your skin heals, it sometimes produces extra melanin in the affected area, leaving behind dark marks long after the original wound has disappeared.

Types of Pigmentation

Understanding which type of pigmentation affects your skin is key to formulating an effective treatment approach. Each type of pigmentation has distinct characteristics and responds differently to treatment approaches.

Melasma appears as brown or gray-brown patches, most commonly on the face. This stubborn form of hyperpigmentation typically affects women and worsens with sun exposure, heat, and hormonal changes. Melasma can be particularly challenging to treat and often requires a comprehensive, long-term approach.

Sun spots (also called age spots or liver spots) develop from years of UV exposure. These flat, brown spots typically appear on areas that receive the most sun exposure: your face, hands, shoulders and arms. While harmless, sun spots can add years to your appearance and create an uneven complexion.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) typically presents as dark spots or patches where your skin has healed from injury or inflammation. Acne breakouts commonly cause PIH, but any trauma to the skin (from eczema, psoriasis or even aggressive treatments) can trigger this response. PIH appears darker on deeper skin tones and may take months or years to fade without treatment.

Freckles are small, concentrated areas of melanin that become more prominent with sun exposure. While many people embrace their freckles, others prefer a more uniform complexion. Professional treatments can lighten freckles while maintaining a natural appearance.

Your Pigmentation Treatment Options at U Laser Med Spa

Our comprehensive approach to pigmentation addresses both the surface-level discoloration and the underlying factors that trigger excess melanin production. We combine multiple advanced technologies to fade existing dark spots, prevent new ones from forming and reveal the luminous, even-toned skin beneath.

Hollywood SpectraTM Laser

The Hollywood Spectra laser was the first FDA-cleared device specifically approved for melasma treatment, making it an exceptional choice for stubborn pigmentation concerns. This advanced Q-switched laser delivers ultra-short pulses of energy that shatter melanin deposits without damaging surrounding tissue. The device’s dual wavelengths allow our team to customize treatment for various types of pigmentation, from superficial sun spots to deeper melasma. Most patients notice significant fading after a series of treatments, with continued improvement over the following months.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatment

IPL therapy targets the melanin responsible for dark spots and uneven skin tone using broad-spectrum light technology. The light energy is absorbed by pigmented areas, causing them to darken initially before flaking away to reveal clearer skin beneath. IPL is very effective for treating sun damage, age spots and general discoloration across larger areas like the face, chest and hands. Many of our patients love how IPL addresses pigmentation and redness with one treatment, creating a more balanced, youthful complexion overall.

Custom Combination Treatments

Many of our patients find that they can achieve the best results with a carefully sequenced combination of treatments that address pigmentation from multiple angles. Every case is unique in terms of which treatment combination will be most effective. For example, our experienced team might recommend pairing chemical peels with laser treatments or combining IPL therapy with professional facials to deliver the results you’re looking for.

These customized protocols allow us to target your specific concerns more comprehensively than any single treatment could achieve alone, accelerating your journey to clearer, more radiant skin.

Your Treatment Experience at U Laser Med Spa

First, one of our experienced providers will carefully evaluate your skin concerns, discuss your goals, and examine the type and depth of your pigmentation in a consultation appointment. We will review your medical history, sun exposure habits and any factors that might be contributing to your discoloration. Then, we will create a personalized treatment plan that addresses your specific needs, explaining which combination of therapies will be most effective for your situation.

Most patients begin seeing pigmentation fade within four to six weeks after starting treatment, with continued improvement over the following months as damaged cells are replaced by fresh, evenly pigmented skin. Throughout your treatment plan, we’ll closely watch your progress and adjust your plan as needed to keep you on track toward your goals. We’ll also recommend medical-grade skincare products and sun protection strategies to maintain your results long-term.
