Causes of Visible Leg Veins

Veins are blood vessels that carry oxygen-depleted blood back to the heart. To prevent blood from flowing in the wrong direction, veins have valves inside them. Unfortunately, advanced age and certain lifestyle factors can cause these valves to weaken, leading blood to pool inside the veins. When this happens, it is known as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). CVI often manifests as visible veins, especially in the legs:

Spider veins

Medically known as telangiectasias, spider veins are less than 1 mm thick and appear close to the surface of the skin as blue, purple or red lines. They are essentially a mild form of varicose veins.

While anyone can get CVI, women over 50 years of age are most likely to be affected. Working in settings that require long periods of sitting or standing can also increase your risk of CVI. Luckily, you can remove unsightly leg veins with nonsurgical treatments offered at our clinic.

Sclerotherapy

At our offices in La Jolla, CA, we treat most vein problems with sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is a long-standing treatment for spider veins. This minimally-invasive procedure works really well for spider veins.

Unlike vein stripping, sclerotherapy is:

  • quick, with no downtime needed
  • minimally invasive
  • done without general anesthesia
  • effective and affordable

During a sclerotherapy procedure, trained providers inject a chemical irritant called a sclerosing agent into the affected vein. This leads to controlled damage to the vein, which causes it to collapse and be replaced with scar tissue. Sclerotherapy does not compromise circulation since blood flow is redirected to healthy nearby veins once the damaged one dies.

A sclerotherapy session typically lasts 15-30 minutes, and most patients require two-three sessions. The final results are noticeable four weeks to six months after treatment, depending on case severity.

Sclerotherapy, while not painful, may lead to short-lasting discomfort during treatment. The discomfort usually fades a couple of days post-treatment. You may also experience mild bruising and discoloration at the treatment site. This is normal and should resolve on its own within 6-12 weeks.

Laser Vein Therapy

Patients who have a known allergy to sclerosing agents or who wish to avoid needles can opt for laser vein treatment.

At U Laser Med Spa, we offer:

Simple laser treatment. This approach treats spider veins by sending a focused beam of laser energy through the skin. The laser energy generates controlled heating within the veins, causing them to collapse and die. Such devices come with a built-in cooling system to minimize discomfort.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is laser vein removal safe?

Both sclerotherapy and laser vein treatment have good safety records. When performed by skilled and certified health professionals, there is a very low risk of complications. The main risks of these treatments are infections and allergic reactions.

Will spider veins go away on their own?

In short, no. Spider veins will not disappear without treatment. The only way to make problem veins less visible is with one of these treatments.

Can problem veins recur after treatment?

Yes, spider veins can, unfortunately, recur after treatment. Vein removal only treats the symptoms of CVI but cannot address its underlying causes. We aim to minimize recurrence rates by using techniques we believe will yield the best possible outcomes for our patients.

How long do the results last?

Results from sclerotherapy and laser vein removal are typically permanent. Once the treated spider vein is gone, it should be gone for good. Over months to years, you may notice new problem veins forming or, rarely, the treated veins returning. Practice good vein health habits to minimize these risks.

Does insurance cover leg vein removal?

Sclerotherapy and laser treatments for spider veins are considered cosmetic procedures, so they are not covered by insurance.
