Every time you smile, squint or frown, your facial muscles contract and the skin above those muscles creases. These creases are known as “dynamic” wrinkles because they appear when the face is in motion. Over time, repeated muscle contractions cause fine lines and wrinkles to form, and the creases deepen into “static” wrinkles that are visible when the face is at rest. Dysport is injected directly into the muscles to immobilize them temporarily. By reducing activity of facial muscles, Dysport relaxes and softens existing wrinkles while preventing future lines from developing.

Dysport is an FDA-approved treatment for minimizing moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines or “11 lines”) that extend vertically toward the forehead. These are amongst the most pronounced dynamic lines on the face. They are most noticeable when a person frowns or furrows their brow but with time can become more prominent when the face is in a relaxed state.

Dysport and Botox are both anti-aging injectables that temporarily reduce muscle activity to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. They are derived from the same bacterium and can produce similar results but are formulated differently. Dysport is a newer product that requires different preparation and dosing. Dysport naturally diffuses more once it is injected, which can be beneficial for treating a larger area, and some patients find that it shows results more quickly.

Though they are both injectable cosmetic treatments, Dysport and dermal fillers are not the same. Dysport temporarily reduces muscle activity to address the underlying cause of dynamic wrinkle formation. Dermal fillers increase volume in the face to “fill in” existing lines. A treatment plan that combines Dysport and dermal fillers often yields the most transformative results.

Dysport injections are a true “lunchtime procedure” that can be completed in roughly 10 to 20 minutes. The length of your treatment session will depend on the number of areas being injected. Glabellar lines can typically be treated with 3 to 5 injections. Most patients experience little to no discomfort during the process. Little downtime, if any, is required after Dysport injections. Patients can usually resume regular activities immediately after leaving the office. Some side effects may occur post-injection, such as slight pain or swelling. Most are minor and subside on their own in a day or two.

Dysport targets frown lines between the eyebrows without changing the look or movement of the rest of your face. Many patients see improvement in two to three days after their appointment, with the full effect of the procedure emerging over the following days as the treated muscles relax.
