Dysport

Facial wrinkles can make you appear stressed, tired, angry and older than you feel. While a healthy lifestyle and a consistent skin care regimen are essential to graceful aging, they may not be enough to achieve the results you’re seeking. A prescription treatment is the best choice for many men and women seeking dramatic facial rejuvenation and lasting results.

Dysport is an effective anti-aging treatment that improves the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. Untreated areas continue to move naturally, so it’s your lines that are minimized, not your expressions. We offer Dysport injections and a range of other injectables at U Laser Medspa in La Jolla, CA.

What Is Dysport?

Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) is a prescription neuromodulator manufactured by Galderma and approved by the FDA in 2009 for cosmetic use in adults. It belongs to the same family of purified protein injectables as Botox® and is used to soften specific dynamic wrinkles by temporarily limiting muscle activity. The formula is manufactureddiluted differently from other neuromodulators, which may produce gives it a slightly thinner consistency and a tendency to spread evenly through the targeted muscle group. We offer Dysport as a nonsurgical anti-aging option for adults who want softer frown lines without inhibiting the natural movement of the surrounding areas.

How Does Dysport Work?

Every time you smile, squint or frown, your facial muscles contract and the skin above those muscles creases. These creases are known as “dynamic” wrinkles because they appear when the face is in motion. Repeated muscle contractions cause fine lines and wrinkles to form, and the creases deepen into “static” wrinkles that are visible when the face is at rest. Dysport is injected directly into the muscles to block the signals that tell the muscles to move. When motion is reduced in specific facial muscles, existing wrinkles soften, and future static lines are prevented.

What Concerns Can Be Treated With Dysport?

Dysport is FDA-approved for minimizing moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines or “11 lines”) that extend vertically toward the forehead. These are amongst the most pronounced dynamic lines on the face. They are most noticeable when a person frowns or furrows their brow, but with time, these expression lines can become more prominent when the face is in a relaxed state.

The Benefits of Dysport

Quick Onset of Results: Many patients begin to notice softening of frown lines within three days, which is faster than some other neuromodulators in the same category.
Natural-Looking Movement: Because Dysport only works locally, the rest of your face continues to move normally, so smiles and other expressions are not affected.
Even Diffusion Across the Glabella: The formula spreads slightly more than other neuromodulators after injection for a smooth result.
No Recovery Time: Most patients return to work and social plans the same day.
Prevents Deepening of Lines: Routine treatment over time can slow the progression of static wrinkles by keeping the underlying muscle from repeatedly creasing the skin.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Dysport?

Dysport is best for adults with frown lines who are in good general health and have realistic expectations about what a neuromodulator can do. Candidates should also not have a known allergy to cow’s milk protein, be pregnant or breastfeeding or have an active skin infection at the injection site. If you have any neuromuscular conditions, be sure to let your provider know, as this may affect your candidacy. During your consultation, we will go over your medical history and current medications, as well as your aesthetic concerns, to determine whether Dysport, Botox or another option in our injectables menu fits your goals.

Before a Dysport Treatment

Dysport injections can involve some bruising, but you can reduce this chance by stopping certain medications and supplements, including aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E and high doses of ginkgo biloba and by limiting alcohol for 24 to 48 hours before your appointment. If you have an upcoming event, schedule your appointment at least two weeks in advance so the full effect has time to settle in. Let your injector know if you have used any neuromodulator within the past three months, even at another practice, so they can plan your dosing.

During a Dysport Treatment

Dysport injections are a true “lunchtime procedure” that can be completed in roughly 10 to 20 minutes. The length of your treatment session will depend on the number of areas being injected. After conducting a facial analysis and discussing your aesthetic goals, your provider will create a treatment plan customized to achieve your desired outcome. Glabellar lines can typically be treated with 3 to 5 injections. Most patients experience little to no discomfort during the process. If you are concerned about pain, ice may be applied to the treatment area before the injections begin.

After Dysport Treatment

Mild redness, slight swelling or pinpoint bumps at the injection sites are common and usually resolve within a few hours. For the first four hours, stay upright and avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area, which helps the product stay where it was placed. The product will also work best if you skip strenuous exercise, saunas, hot tubs and hot yoga for the rest of the day, and avoid facial treatments such as microneedling or chemical peels for two weeks unless your provider says otherwise.

How does Dysport work?

Every time you smile, squint or frown, your facial muscles contract and the skin above those muscles creases. These creases are known as “dynamic” wrinkles because they appear when the face is in motion. Over time, repeated muscle contractions cause fine lines and wrinkles to form, and the creases deepen into “static” wrinkles that are visible when the face is at rest. Dysport is injected directly into the muscles to immobilize them temporarily. By reducing activity of facial muscles, Dysport relaxes and softens existing wrinkles while preventing future lines from developing.

What concerns can be treated with Dysport?

Dysport is an FDA-approved treatment for minimizing moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines or “11 lines”) that extend vertically toward the forehead. These are amongst the most pronounced dynamic lines on the face. They are most noticeable when a person frowns or furrows their brow but with time can become more prominent when the face is in a relaxed state.

How is Dysport different from Botox?

Dysport and Botox are both anti-aging injectables that temporarily reduce muscle activity to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. They are derived from the same bacterium and can produce similar results but are formulated differently. Dysport is a newer product that requires different preparation and dosing. Dysport naturally diffuses more once it is injected, which can be beneficial for treating a larger area, and some patients find that it shows results more quickly.

How is Dysport different from fillers?

Though they are both injectable cosmetic treatments, Dysport and dermal fillers are not the same. Dysport temporarily reduces muscle activity to address the underlying cause of dynamic wrinkle formation. Dermal fillers increase volume in the face to “fill in” existing lines. A treatment plan that combines Dysport and dermal fillers often yields the most transformative results.

Is Dysport safe?

Dysport injections are safe when performed by a professional who is trained and licensed to administer Dysport. The injections are generally well-tolerated by patients. Possible side effects will be reviewed prior to your procedure.

What happens during Dysport treatment?

Dysport injections are a true “lunchtime procedure” that can be completed in roughly 10 to 20 minutes. The length of your treatment session will depend on the number of areas being injected. After conducting a facial analysis and discussing your aesthetic goals, your provider will create a treatment plan customized to achieve your desired outcome. Glabellar lines can typically be treated with 3 to 5 injections. Most patients experience little to no discomfort during the process. If you are concerned about pain, ice or a topical numbing cream may be applied to the treatment area before the injections begin.

Is there downtime after treatment?

Little downtime, if any, is required after Dysport injections. Patients can usually resume regular activities immediately after leaving the office. Some side effects may occur post-injection, such as slight pain or swelling. Most are minor and subside on their own in a day or two.

What results can I expect?

Dysport targets frown lines between the eyebrows without changing the look or movement of the rest of your face. Many patients see improvement in two to three days after their appointment, with the full effect of the procedure emerging over the following days as the treated muscles relax.

How long will my results last?

Dysport is a long-lasting but not permanent solution for improving the appearance of your frown lines. The results typically last about three months. Ongoing injection sessions are required to preserve your smooth and youthful look.
