Chemical Peels

As we age, skin imperfections start to make their way to the surface. Wrinkles, sun damage, acne scars and other flaws begin to arise on your complexion and can cause the skin to appear uneven, dull or prematurely aged. Fortunately, smoother, healthier and more radiant skin is just beneath the surface and can easily be revealed with a chemical peel treatment at U Laser Med Spa.

A chemical peel or facial peel is a skin-resurfacing treatment that gently strips away dead skin cells from varying depths of the skin to reduce the appearance of lines, discolorations and impurities and allow for new healthy skin cells to take their place. A facial peel can dramatically improve both your skin tone and texture to restore a healthy, natural glow to your complexion and take years off of your appearance – all in one short treatment.

What Skincare Concerns Can a Chemical Peel Treat?

Chemical peels have varying degrees of strength and unique formulations designed to successfully treat a broad range of skin concerns. The mildest option is known as a superficial peel or lunchtime peel, which can be used to exfoliate the surface layer of the skin. Medium to deep peels work to penetrate deeper layers of skin to promote higher cellular turnover and more dramatic results but require more extended periods of downtime.

At U Laser Med Spa, our chemical peel treatments can adequately address the following skin concerns:

  • Facial lines and wrinkles
  • Discoloration or blotchiness
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Age spots or brown spots (hyperpigmentation)
  • Scars or rough skin texture
  • Rough or scaly patches of skin
  • Some forms of acne

How Is a Chemical Peel Performed?

Your chemical peel will be performed in-office at our La Jolla medical center and typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes to complete, depending on the type of peel selected and the strength of the solution.

Why Do We Need Chemical Peels?

There is a number of factors that can affect the appearance of our faces. The first and most impactful is the natural aging process. As we get older, the core processes of our bodies begin to break down. The production of collagen and elastin — two of the proteins most responsible for skin elasticity — are hit dramatically. According to Scientific American, people over the age of 20 lose 1% of their collagen production every year. Elastin also becomes significantly less abundant.

Environmental factors can also play a role in harming the integrity of our skin. Excessive sun exposure is the primary environmental consideration. People who experience a lot of sunlight tend to notice their skin breaking down earlier on average than those who experience less.

Genetics are the third-most critical factor — your body’s ability to maintain collagen and elastin production naturally is directly related to your genetics. This is why some groups of people have a reputation for looking more youthful for a longer period of time. Unfortunately, though, the aging process eventually comes for us all.

We need chemical peels because there are limited options when it comes to the nonsurgical correction of blemishing like fine lines and wrinkles. The options become even more scarce when we look for solutions that can provide comparable results.

What to Expect From Your Recovery and Results

Most mild or superficial chemical peels require little to no downtime following their application. While you may experience some residual redness for an hour or two following a peel treatment, or some dryness and skin flaking over the course of a few days, you should be able to return to your normal daily activities immediately.

More aggressive, medium-depth peels will require a bit more time for the skin to heal, typically about five to seven days, before side effects like redness, dryness and swelling completely subside. It is vital that you follow your provided aftercare instructions to ensure your skin heals properly.

Immediately after your chemical peel, whether light or medium, your skin will temporarily be more sensitive to UV rays, so it’s essential for you to apply sunscreen to your treated areas daily and avoid exposing your face to direct sunlight for prolonged periods. Limiting sun exposure will also help you maintain the results of your treatment and help prevent further skin concerns from developing.

While your skin will not be immune to the natural aging process and will still be affected by lifestyle and environmental factors, the results of your facial peel will bring healthier and smoother-looking skin to the surface for a more youthful and flawless complexion.
