How Do Prominent Leg Veins Develop?

In most cases, leg veins become visible when the tiny valves inside the veins, which are meant to prevent blood from flowing back, stop working properly. When these valves weaken or fail, blood is allowed to pool in the vein as it struggles to overcome the force of gravity and return to the heart, causing a buildup of pressure in the vein and a potential cascade of additional symptoms (including visible leg veins).

Several factors contribute to the development of leg veins, including the following:

Genetics

If your parents had visible leg veins, you’re more likely to develop them as well

Hormonal shifts

Pregnancy, menopause, and the use of certain drugs or medications can sometimes weaken vein walls and increase your chance of leg vein problems by affecting hormone levels

Age

Your blood vessels naturally become weaker with time

Activity

Sitting or standing for long periods of time on a regular basis encourages leg vein problems

Gender

Women are more likely to develop leg vein issues due to hormonal changes and pregnancy-related changes in blood volume and circulation.

Types of Leg Vein Problems

Not all leg veins look the same or require identical treatment approaches. Understanding the difference between spider veins and varicose veins helps determine which treatment will work best for your situation.

Spider Veins

Spider veins appear as thin, web-like clusters of red, purple or blue vessels visible just beneath your skin’s surface. These small veins typically measure less than a single millimeter in diameter and tend to appear on the thighs, calves, and ankles. While spider veins are not typically associated with major discomfort, they can create an uneven skin tone and can lead to feeling self-conscious about exposing your legs.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are larger, more prominent vessels that bulge from the surface of the skin. They often display the same blue or purple colors as spider veins, but they are more twisted and rope-like in their appearance.

While it’s not a guarantee, varicose veins are more likely to be associated with physical symptoms than spider veins. Many people with varicose veins experience aching, heaviness, throbbing or cramping in their legs, particularly after extended periods of standing. Some develop swelling around the ankles or notice their legs feel tired and restless by day’s end. Varicose veins are best treated by a vascular surgeon.

Reticular Veins

Reticular veins fall somewhere between spider veins and varicose veins in severity and size. These blue-green vessels typically measure between one and three millimeters in diameter and often feed into spider vein clusters. For this reason, they’re sometimes called “feeder veins.” While they don’t typically bulge like varicose veins, they are usually prominent enough to cause an uneven appearance across your legs.

Your Leg Vein Treatment Options at U Laser Med Spa

We have carefully selected our leg vein treatments to address spider veins effectively. Our approach focuses on eliminating visible vessels while preventing new ones from forming, giving you results that enhance both appearance and comfort.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is the gold standard for treating spider veins. During treatment, our skilled providers inject a specialized solution directly into the problem veins. This solution irritates the walls of the targeted vessels, causing them to collapse and seal shut. Your body then naturally reroutes blood through healthier vessels while gradually absorbing the treated veins over the following weeks.

The procedure itself takes about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on how many veins require treatment. You can return to normal activities immediately, though we recommend avoiding heavier activities for a few days while your veins heal.

Results develop gradually as treated veins fade from view. Spider veins typically disappear within three to six weeks. The best results are achieved with multiple treatments, scheduled six to eight weeks apart.  The treated vessels will initially look darker before they heal and then they will gradually lighten and disappear.

Laser Vein Therapy

Laser vein therapy offers an excellent alternative for treating spider veins and small reticular veins. This advanced treatment delivers precise bursts of light energy that heat and destroy unwanted vessels without damaging the surrounding tissue. The targeted veins gradually break down and disappear as your body absorbs them naturally. The best candidates for this treatment have lighter skin types.

During treatment, you’ll feel a slight warming sensation as the laser targets each vein. Most sessions last 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the treatment area. The procedure requires no downtime, allowing you to resume your regular routine immediately.

Laser-treated veins typically fade within four to six weeks, though some patients notice improvement within days. Multiple sessions may be necessary to address all visible veins and achieve your desired results. Our team at U Laser Med Spa will develop a personalized treatment plan that maximizes your outcomes while minimizing the number of sessions needed.

Customized Treatment Plans

During your consultation, our experienced team will evaluate your leg veins and recommend the most effective treatment strategy for your specific concerns. We’ll explain what to expect during and after treatment, how many sessions you’ll likely need, and provide detailed aftercare instructions to optimize your results.

Your Journey to Smoother Legs

Your path to beautiful legs begins with a consultation appointment where we’ll assess your veins, discuss your concerns and create a personalized treatment plan. We’ll examine the size, location and severity of your leg veins while considering factors like your medical history and lifestyle to determine which treatments will deliver the best results for you.

After treatment, walking is encouraged to promote healthy circulation, though you should avoid hot baths, saunas, hot yoga, and intense exercise for about a week. Most patients experience minimal discomfort and can return to work and normal activities immediately.

While treated veins won’t return, new ones may develop over time due to ongoing genetic and lifestyle factors. Maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, elevating your legs when resting and wearing compression stockings during long periods of standing or sitting can help preserve your results and prevent new veins from forming.
