Collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid play essential roles in maintaining skin strength, elasticity, moisture and structure. As time passes, these essential ingredients for beautiful skin diminish. The skin becomes dull, lax and etched with lines and wrinkles that grow deeper every year.

We offer a family of hyaluronic dermal fillers called Restylane to help restore volume to areas that have begun to age. Restylane can be used on many different areas of the face. This fast, no-downtime treatment is one option for our patients in La Jolla and the surrounding areas who want a nonsurgical way to treat signs of aging.

At U Laser Med Spa, your Restylane treatment is performed by aesthetic nurse injectors Stacey Ross, DNP, and Amy Sinda, RN-BSN, two highly trained providers dedicated to safe and natural-looking results.

What Is Restylane?

Restylane is a collection of dermal fillers made from hyaluronic acid that can restore a firmer, plumper and more youthful appearance to your skin. By adding lost hyaluronic acid back into your body, Restylane can achieve temporary rejuvenation of areas that show age most, including the face, lips and hands. Restylane delivers subtle, natural results to reveal a younger-looking you that still looks like you.

Which Restylane Filler Is Right for You?

Restylane has several products that are each formulated for a specific concern or area. During your consultation, your injector will recommend a single formula or a combination of products that will serve you best.

  • Restylane and Restylane-L smooth moderate to severe wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds and provide subtle lip enhancement. They are the same formulation, but Restylane-L includes lidocaine for pain reduction.
  • Restylane Lyft adds lift and volume to the cheeks and midface and restores fullness to the back of the hands.
  • Restylane Silk is designed for subtle lip enhancement and for smoothing the fine lines around the mouth.
  • Restylane Kysse adds volume to the lips while softening the wrinkles above the upper lip.
  • Restylane Refyne softens moderate laugh lines and marionette lines while supporting natural facial expression.
  • Restylane Defyne corrects deeper laugh lines and marionette lines and can also improve the profile of the chin.
  • Restylane Contour sculpts the cheeks and midface and addresses temple hollowing.
  • Restylane Eyelight targets under-eye hollowing for a smoother, more rested appearance.

About Us

What to Expect From Restylane Treatments

Preparation

Preparing for injectable treatments is easier than getting ready for surgery. Certain steps, like avoiding any medications or supplements that thin the blood and increase the risk of bleeding, can be helpful for making recovery easier. You can also stay hydrated before your treatment to get the best results. Otherwise, just come to your consultation ready to discuss the results you want and any relevant medical history.

Injections

The chosen Restylane product will need to be injected into several different points to add even volume to the area. Each injection will be more comfortable because of the lidocaine in the formulation, and we can also use topical numbing cream to decrease the sensation of the injections. The entire area can be treated in around 15-30 minutes.

Aftercare

Dermal fillers can cause some swelling, which will mask your final results for several days. Eventually, the filler will settle in, the swelling will go down, and you will be able to enjoy the full volumizing effects. To help with the healing process, avoid touching or massaging the injected area for several days and avoid strong heat or sun exposure. We also recommend waiting to resume intense workouts for one or two days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What concerns can be treated with Restylane?

Restylane’s comprehensive line of dermal fillers contains multiple formulas that can address an array of concerns for the face, lips and hands. Depending on the formula used, Restylane can:

  • Smooth facial wrinkles and folds
  • Provide subtle lip enhancement
  • Minimize lines around the mouth
  • Add lift and volume to the cheeks
  • Enhance facial contours
  • Decrease signs of volume loss in the back of the hands

How is Restylane different from other injectables?

Dermal filler formulations vary in composition, consistency and longevity. Different fillers deliver different results, even within the Restylane family. Dr. Umansky often recommends Restylane to patients seeking to reduce the appearance of nasolabial folds, marionette lines and vertical lip lines. Restylane and other dermal fillers are not the same as Botox and Dysport, which are injections that temporarily freeze muscle movement to relax wrinkles.

Is Restylane safe?

Restylane is FDA-approved for adding volume to the skin in patients over 21 years of age. There are minimal risks associated with Restylane, many of which can be avoided by choosing a knowledgeable and experienced injector. If you are unhappy with the results, experience complications or simply decide Restylane is not for you, it can be safely and rapidly dissolved with an injection of an enzyme that accelerates the natural breakdown of the hyaluronic acid in the filler.

Do Restylane treatments hurt?

Restylane is injected into the treatment area using an ultrafine needle to minimize discomfort. Many patients only feel a quick pinch. If you are concerned about pain, we can discuss options to make you as comfortable as possible during the procedure.

Is there downtime after treatment?

Patients need minimal, if any, downtime after receiving Restylane injections. Many patients return to work shortly after the procedure, though if you have had a larger number of injections or are sensitive to injections you may want to give yourself a day to recover. You may experience some tenderness, swelling, redness, pain, bruising or itching at the injection site. These side effects are typically mild in severity and fade within a week.

What results can I expect?

Results from Restylane injections are visible as soon as the injection process is complete. Restylane instantly adds volume to the treatment area, plumping the lips or smoothing unsightly lines and wrinkles. Full results are usually evident within one week.

How long will my results last?

The longevity of a Restylane procedure varies from patient to patient and will depend on the location of the treatment area, the severity of the concern being corrected and your unique biology. In general, patients can expect to see results for up to six months. Restylane injections are not permanent fillers. Maintenance appointments will be required to preserve your results. We will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan that makes sense for your schedule and your body chemistry.

What is the difference between Restylane and Botox?

Both Restylane and Botox are injectables, but they are used for different signs of aging. Restylane products are used for areas that lack volume. Botox and other products like Dysport are used for dynamic wrinkles. These are the wrinkles that appear when you make a facial expression and then disappear at rest. They block the signals that cause the muscles to move and allow the skin to stay smooth. Many people choose to combine Restylane and Botox for more complete results.

Who is Restylane for?

Most people who want to reverse the signs of aging or improve facial contours without surgery are potential candidates for Restylane. When administered by a skilled injector, Restylane is safe for a wide variety of ages, skin types and ethnicities. Patients should be in general good health, demonstrate a clear understanding of the treatment process and have reasonable expectations of the results dermal fillers can achieve. Restylane may be combined with other anti-aging solutions, such as Botox or Dysport, for comprehensive facial rejuvenation.
