Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a nonsurgical skin resurfacing treatment that reduces fine lines, refines pores, lightens areas of uneven pigmentation, reduces the appearance of scars and stretch marks, brightens dull complexions and stimulates collagen production. Because microdermabrasion treats only the outermost layer of skin, the procedure is a quick, safe and painless way to achieve a more radiant and youthful appearance. Many clients look and feel rejuvenated after just one session, though we recommend a series of treatments to focus on the needs of your individual skin and maximize the benefits of microdermabrasion.

How does microdermabrasion work?

A microdermabrasion machine has two functions. It loosens the superficial layer of dry, dead skin cells by buffing the skin with a controlled flow of fine, medical-grade aluminum oxide crystals. At the same time, it removes the crystals and dead skin cells with a vacuum suction component. The procedure is noninvasive and uses no harsh chemicals. Microdermabrasion should not be confused with traditional dermabrasion, which is a more aggressive procedure with an increased risk of side effects and a longer recovery time. Microdermabrasion is appropriate for a broader range of skin types and colors.

What concerns can be treated with microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion can gently but effectively treat a range of skin concerns and conditions, including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun damage
  • Blackheads and whiteheads
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Age spots
  • Melasma
  • Mild acne and superficial acne scars
  • Stretch marks
  • Enlarged pores
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Dull complexion

Microdermabrasion is designed to improve minor imperfections and achieve general facial rejuvenation. More significant skin concerns — such as deep wrinkles and scars, severe or cystic acne, sagging skin and particularly large or dark spots — may be better addressed by an alternative treatment. We will discuss your cosmetic goals and expectations to create an appropriate plan for the changes you’re hoping to see in your skin.

What happens during microdermabrasion treatment?

Microdermabrasion is an in-office procedure that typically takes less than one hour. During the treatment, your specialist will prepare your skin by cleansing your face of any dirt or makeup. Your specialist will then pass the handpiece of the microdermabrasion machine methodically over your skin. The device’s spray of aluminum oxide crystals buffs the outer layer of skin to loosen debris and dead skin cells. Simultaneously, the vacuum component of the device suctions the exfoliating crystals back into the machine along with the dead skin cells. Once the microdermabrasion is complete, your face may be cleansed a final time and a hydrating cream may be applied to protect your skin.

Does microdermabrasion hurt?

Though removing the top layer of skin cells may sound aggressive, microdermabrasion is a comfortable treatment. Many patients compare the feeling of the procedure to the lick of a cat’s tongue – slightly rough or gritty, but not painful. Some report feeling only a minor tugging sensation on the skin. There is no need for anesthesia or numbing agents.

Is there downtime after treatment?

Microdermabrasion requires little to no downtime from regular activities. You may experience some tenderness, swelling or redness after treatment, depending on your sensitivity, but these side effects are usually mild and subside within a few hours. You may also notice some light dryness, tightness or flaking. Keep your skin hydrated, use gentle skin care products and wear sunscreen regularly to protect your fresh, sensitive skin from UV damage.

What results can I expect?

You can expect to see visible results immediately after a microdermabrasion procedure. With a single session, microdermabrasion leaves your skin feeling softer and smoother and your complexion looking more radiant. This healthy glow can last for several days, but for best results, we recommend a series of microdermabrasion treatments. With repeated treatments, microdermabrasion can more effectively smooth fine lines, clear pore blockages and blackheads and treat uneven pigmentation. Regular microdermabrasion also encourages cellular turnover and can enhance the efficacy of your skin care products by allowing them to penetrate your skin more easily.
